HARDWOOD COLLECTION

Our hardwood furniture collection is made from forest products sourced sustainably in Panama or found by windfall or driftwood in Reserva Ecologica Panamaes, where we have planted over 80,000 native trees. In designing and managing the conservation agroforestry program at Panamaes we've become deeply knowledgeable of the qualities of these hardwoods from seed to final product, each with its strengths, colors, textures, and figures. Each modern piece in this collection respects the inherent qualities of the species it was created from, allowing the beauty to be revealed rather than forged.

TEAK: SCOURGE AND REDEMPTION

When we first began work in Panama, we learned that the teak plantations on our site were degrading our soil, making native reforestation impossible. How did this species native to Southeast Asia end up in Panama? And how would this invasive species upend our work for a decade to come? SLAB SOFA

This sofa was designed from one continuous slab of espavé (Anacardium excelsum) wood, which spans the entire back. The contiguous grain runs across the arms and down the front legs, composed from the same slab and connected through timber joints. An exercise in the purity of a material, this giant sofa pays homage to the enormous tropical species it was formed from.

Our hardwood collection is sourced and crafted in Panama, by our team of local ebanistas (carpenters). In managing the forest preserve, we have the unique opportunity to both metaphorically and literally preserve the chain-of-custody of our forest products, raw materials, and our design concepts — from inception through final fabrication.
