Firm Profile

IM/KM Architecture and Planning is a firm that integrates the built environment with ecological conservation through a holistic design process.

IM/KM was formed in 2008 when the architectural design team of Ivan and Kristin Morales brought their combined design expertise, gained from their years of experience at award-winning New York City design firms, to a 1,000-person surf town on the Pacific coast of Panama.

In the remote and ecologically sensitive region of the Azuero Peninsula, the firm developed residences, hospitality and mixed use projects, adopting innovative approaches to land use and materials. In 2021, the firm moved their headquarters to Miami, Florida, while maintaining an office in Panama. 

IM/KM was developed against a backdrop of endangered tropical and coastal ecosystems, which deepened and expanded their role as architects. As a result, the firm formed Reserva Ecologica Panamaes, a non-profit ecological reserve in Panama, and Studio Tlalli, a design studio that produces furniture and objects using sustainable supply chains at the reserve. 

The firm works globally, with a focus on the Americas, on projects comprehensive of architecture and sustainable land use. IM/KM is adept at building diverse teams in challenging environments and working with local municipalities to execute large-scale environmental and social programming. The firm collaborates with their clients to create beautiful modern architecture that engages with the surrounding environment, and offers the potential to utilize built space in conservation efforts that are economically viable and have scientific and social impact.

FOUNDER / PRINCIPAL DESIGNER

Kristin leads the firm with sustainable design strategy and planning, visualizing the teams comprehensive ideas through building information modeling and design detailing. She guides the team at IM/KM by empowering deeper insights and encouraging creative exploration. Prior to the formation of IM/KM, Kristin was associated with several award winning architectural firms – FXFOWLE, H3, Magnusson Architecture and Planning, Gary Shoemaker Architects, PC, Daniel E. Snyder Architect, PC, and Davis Brody Bond. Kristin’s work with associate offices has been published in Architectural Record, the Architects Newspaper, and New York Living magazines. Kristin has served as a guest critic at New Jersey Institute of Technology and at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

IM/KM Architecture and Planning is our architectural and planning firm, and manages Studio Tlalli and Reserva Ecologica Panamaes. We have offices in Miami, Florida and at Reserva Panamaes in Panama. We work globally on residential and civic architecture projects that integrate sustainable land use.

Studio Tlalli is our furniture studio based at Reserva Panamaes in Panama - we have a dedicated sub-site for our furniture collections here: Studio Tlalli. IM/KM and Studio Tlalli are separate entities that are united by a shared vision, set of values, and operational leadership. IM/KM is an architecture and planning firm that takes on complex projects, and collaborates with Tlalli for contract furniture pieces for site specific installations.  Additionally, Tlalli offers a curated collection of singular pieces to the consumer market. The two are interdependent and have a shared focus on the intersection of conservation and design that yields a positive social and environmental impact. 

Reserva Ecologica Panamaes is a 560 hectare (1,600 acre) private ecological reserve on the Pacific coast of Panama. We developed and manage this reserve as part of our architectural process in collaboration with our clients in Panama.
